As the presenter on BBC’s Football Focus on 30/12/17 reminded us, 1 in 4 will suffer from mental health problems in their lifetime … & as such, being a professional footballer offers you no immunity from developing a mental health condition. As the interview continued, Michael Bennett who is Head of Player Welfare at the PFA, reported that, professional footballers are subject to verbal abuse from supporters both on the pitch, & on social media. A tirade of abuse that would not be tolerated in the vast majority of other workplaces. Michael also introduced us to the battle Chris Kirkland had with depression which ultimately led him to retire from the ‘beautiful game’. His sad story perhaps reminds us that; ‘Mental Health doesn’t care who you are, what you got, it can impact on anyone’.
